Does not have to be in great detail. KInd of curious as to what can fail?
How many bearings are in it? where? When one fails what goes bad?

basically, you have two impellers, and a bearing surface. exhaust pushes on the one side, which turns the clean air side, which forces the air through the air to air cooler in front of the radiator, which cools the air from the heat built up from the compression from the turbo. the air is then forced into the cylinder, with fuel mixture which increases the horsepower. in a simplistic explanation

It all can go bad. The wheels don't like foreign objects like dirt and the bearings can go bad with overheating and ware. Side play in the bearings can cause the turbocharger to destroy itself (after a lot of wear and miles). These usually just quit developing boost and that is when you need a rebuild. Or get a re-built unit.
