Hello,
We have a 1990 Ford E350 Ambulance with a remanufactured 7.3L IDI engine. The truck is pushing 300,000 miles. When starting it up after its been sitting for awhile and the engine is cold it usually starts fine. Then you go drive it down the road and back, shut it off, and it won't start. The engine will turn over for a few seconds, but it won't start. Put the jumper cables on, and it still won't start. It will only start if you let it sit for awhile (1 - 3 hours) or if you shoot some ether into the intake. Same thing if you have driven for an extended period of time. Shut it down and sometimes it won't start.
Any ideas? We took it to a local shop last year and they replaced both batteries and checked the charging system when it was having this problem. Changing the batteries didn't help. Changing the glow plugs didn't help. (My boss still thinks the glow plugs are bad. I saw the glow plugs are NOT the issue because it can be 95 degrees outside and the engine is warm from driving 90 miles and you shut it down and it won't start.) Fuel pump? Any ideas? It just came back from the local shop, and we still have the same problem. The shop couldn't find anything wrong. Help!
