All veterans needs to be a member of the VFW or American Legion, or at least volunteer to be on the Honor Guard. This is the only way a veteran can receive a 21 gun salute. Here at our VFW post we have 22 volunteer to preform the burial detail. Sometime with other commitments its hard to get ten or eleven guys together but we sure try. We cannot forget our veterans.

Update/ More Info

I thought it was worth noting that Dave Bowman's ship the USS Oriskany was "layed to rest" as an artificial reef only about 3 months before his passing.

There is something fitting about a sailor peacefully going to his eternal rest about the same time as his ship.

TG sorry I wasn't here earlier this month. Your son's girlfiend'sfamily cvould have contacted the Patriot Guard Riders. They will provide an Honor Guard consisting mostly of Vets on motorcycles. They were at my friend's FILs funeral. Very professional. Had an Honor Guard with the Ensign and POW flags from the church doors to the hearse. they provided a motorcycle escort to the cemetary, blocking side streets. They stood at graveside and presented my friend's wife with a flag lapel pin that had Mission Complete on it.

Thanks, but not to worry. He passed away a couple of years ago, I resurected the old post with what I thought was a rather ironic and neat bit of extra info.

I had just recently saw the thing on cable about sinking the Oriskiny as an artificial reef. I did some quick research and found out Dave Bowman passed away not long after his ship was "laid to rest". I thought that it was a more fitting way for a fighting ship to be retired vs being scrapped and chopped up into pieces.
