actually had 2 stubborn seals...still was beable to do both sides in 6 hours...

if i wasn`t trying to save the old seals, it would have went quicker( so much for that, paid 250 for 4 ball joints and 150 for the 2 seals). so pretty much plan a day for it....

agreed, but remember ANY shop would hit you for those parts
and then some....and you really SHOULD replace those seals anytime
youre there.

yep. those prices are garage cost. i get all my parts at cost...:thumbs ....(i do work at a garage)...but remember, some parts up here are more expensive then down in the USA...like you said, those seals should be replaced anytime the axle shaft is R/R. whether it be replacing ball joints or replacing the u-joint in the shaft, nothing like having a vaccum leak because those seals are leaking....

parts counter @ the ford dealer (cause thats the ONLY place ive
been able to find those vac. seals) was asking 34 or 54 bucks (each)
when i did my balljoints a few months ago.

the axle dust seals were available at oreillys auto parts for about 10 bucks
(for the pair)

i consider myself LUCKY <for now> that i havent had a vac. leak
(since i cheaped out and didnt do the seals)

Finished one side!

I was only able to finish one side this weekend. This task was much more that I was expecting. Multiple hours trying to get seal out. Lower ball joint was seized in the knuckle. Had to saw it in half and use the ball joint press tool to get it out. Air impact wrench made removing / installing ball joint in knuckle a breeze.:D

I did mine this summer. It wasn't a cake walk, but it wasn't bad enough to where I would want to pay someone to do it either...

I had no choice but to have a shop do it because of time constraints. The shop called me a few hours into it, and the right side wheel bearing was frozen into the spindle. They wanted me to see the problem and sign off a release that the bearing was going to be destroyed. I took a ride over, and they wound up cutting the ball joints with a smoke wrench, removing the spindle, then the bearing had to be pressed out. Of course I had to replace the front wheel bearing, but the left side came right out. Go figure.

ok well i think you guys are a bit of an exception.

1st time ive heard of the needle bearings being frozen to
a spindle (wait, f350drw1 are you 2wd or 4x4?).

the job takes time, some of us have more time than money or
more time than sense or whatever...

i think its pretty commendable that a shop would call you so you
could come and SEE the problem...not many would do that...unfortunately.

4x4, Bush. The entire bearing [which just unbolts and comes out] was stuck in the spindle itself. I know the owner pretty well, and they know whats going on. Always been fair with me. Even lended me the shop truck when it wasn't done at the promised time. They had never seen one stuck, either.
