is their a up grade alt i can buy??

there are quite a number of options out there...
the only upgrade that i can think of is unit that would put out
more amps...but i have to ask...is there a REASON that you
think the existing unit is not outputting enough ?

do you have a higher tha "typical" draw requirement ? amps, lights
etc ?

depending on the year the stock unit outputs about 110amps...there
are units available from aftermarket mfgs that output in excess of 200amps
at "full" speed...you may have requirements for a specific amps draw at
idle...most aftermarket alternators will show specs for an idle output
and a specific output at a given rpm.

read this for more info... http://www.aa1car.com/library/alternator_highoutput.htm

Add one of a PLUG IN VOLTMETER...(you can plug it in to
your power outlet)...when the truck is off, it will report the
BATTERY VOLTAGE...w/ the truck RUNNING it will report the
CHARGING output of the ALTERNATOR (in volts).

the meter (i use) is mfg'd by
CYBERDYNE <--SCROLL DOWN at that LINK
and is available in 4 different display colors

you can pick 'em up all over the place, ebay
SUMMIT RACING and JEGS too.

If the batt light is on I would not head across America just because the minimum wage flunkie at Auto Zone said all systems were go. If the light is on there is a problem. I would remove the alternator and have it tested and check all the connections. Figure out what is wrong so the light goes away before you head out on your trip.

absolutely agree...the time to find out the alternater is going
south faster than autozone THOUGHT...is NOT on a cold (or HOT)
dark and RAINING interstate shoulder
