yes it is a common thing for the donuts to go bad..a lot of us went to bellowd up pipes that do not use the donuts...any soot is a signe of boost loss..the turbo needs that exhaust to spin the turbo....nic's,chips or dusted wheel is also a signe of bad boost...

A 2k stock will be max of 17lbs boost. As others have mentioned, they start making good power around 2000RPM so that is usually where I tow. I doubt I have ever had the engine above 2500 RPM. Even shifted out of OD it is still going about 60-65MPH when climbing.

You may have a hard time getting max boost without a trailer hooked up,m but you
should see more than 10psi

check to make sure that the wastegate is adjusted properly otherwise you are blowing boost off way too soon.
