In the last two weeks (oddly, warm thursdays...) My truck hasn't wanted to start at work. No tach reading when cranking.

After 10min wait, Bertha fires up again. So I'm thinking, CPS eminent failure, correct?

Just took the old CPS off...what a b*tch. I have dual alternators, but that wasn't really the issue. Ended up taking off the upper idler pulley.

Then the metal part broke off :censored: . Twenty minutes later with every prying implement in my arsenal :guns: , the business end finally popped off :sweet , so I'm taking a break for supper, then gonna button her all up!

At least it won't be a four-day ordeal, like my broken water pump bolt last month

Thanks to Daryl for the writeup.

Yep--that sounds like a CPS on it's way out. Just think--even if it was something else, now you won't have to deal with swapping a dead CPS on the side of the road, at night, in the rain/snow/sleet/hail/mud, while traffic passes you at 80 mph throwing gravel at you. Doing unnecessary preventative maintenance isn't such a bad thing at all. :thumbs

no disagreement here!! Now I just wish I had done it while replacing the water pump!! would've been very easy then!

In fact, my suggestion (humbly inexperienced as it is...) is that if this site ever gets a FAQ for waterpump replacement, that it at least make the suggestion to replace the CPS at the same time!

(Oh, and the correct torque specifications for the waterpump bolts...but that's another story for another day and more than just a few brews... -popcorn )

TDS already has one here:
http://www.thedieselstop.com/contents/getitems.php3?99+ PSD Water Pump Replacement

Some folks would like to completely break from TDS, but there is some good info there and that's why I haven't asked to have my membership there removed.

Brian, I'll bet that was like a well guided hammer strike, right on the THUMB :sorry I like the H2O/CPS idea and if anyone makes it that far with no CPS change, REALLY should go ahead and change it. :cowboy:

How did you fare? Bertha up and strummin again

No problems puttin'er all back together...she even started up easier this morning. Between the new alternators in January, the new waterpump in April, the cab lites (and coincidental o/h computer repair/resoldering) last week, and the CPS last night, I'll have a new truck in a couple of months! Oh, did I mention that in the middle of this I'm working on my SVO conversion :D ??

Since we are talking CPS, why do they fail?? I asked the same question "over there" years ago, and nobody could come up with an answer. After all it is a non moving part which should last forever. :dunno

Knock on wood, mine is still good at 75k miles. :thumbs -popcorn

My vote is repeated heat cycling and vibration does it.

Yes I think you are correct. The thing is made of very fine wire and will break easily. Some of these things will last 200k and other 2k would be a lot. One thing for sure is having one in the glove box with a 10mm wrench is a smart thing to do.
