A year or so ago I came across a website where some guy had detailed, step by steps instructions and pictures for changing the front and back diff fluids. Apparently I did not mark the page.

Anyone know of one like that?

Also, what happened to index

pretty easy job...hardest part is gettin the old cover
off (even when the bolts are out).

i used a anti-freez catch pan (open top)...but an oil
change pan would work just as easily.

let the RTV set up a little (10 or 15min) before you slap
the thing up there and start bolting it down.

dont use too much rtv or itll get in the bolt holes and
youll have to clean the holes out w/ a q-tip to get the
bolts in tight (dont ask).

ill pm you my cell number...if you wanna chat 'bout it
at any point.

I let mine sit over night and THEN filled it (i wasnt in a hurry
and i figured it would give time for the rtv to set up good)...
i think the RTV Tube even says to WAIT some amount of time
before filling.

next question - 75w90 or 75w140? I read somewhere else that I only need the 140 if I tow, which I dont.

I run 75w-140 in both the Excursion and Mustang differentials Peter.

Carb cleaner I use to clean the cover with.I also permit the Ultra RTV to skin over for about 15 mins prior to bolt down as Bush mentioned:sweet

i talked to peter -

i recommend the 75w140 if he could find it...over the straight 90w

i cant find my service manual but i recall there being a SLIGHT diff.
in what ford called for...maybe 80w140 or something and the closest
i could find was 75w140

i just checked my garage and found the extra bottle...i used 75w140
in the rear.

my front calls for a diff. weight...and i understand ford has revised
the specs now and says 75w140 or 80w140 for all diffs.

PETER - Im curious what the price of that stuff is now....

I got 75w140 at pepboys for 9.99/qt. They only had 2 so I had to stop at Oreilly's for 2 more at 11.99.

Bart came by to give adult supervision and I got it all done for just at 50$ with the tube of RTV.

I have it all refilled now and will wait until tomorrow around 5 before I drive it again.

Strangely, nowhere in my manual did I find the weight spec. I found one chart that said to use "gear oil." That's helpful.

Thanks Bush and Bill for the input. It was pretty darn simple even for me.
