Differential play

Okay, here is another question. Since my drive shaft is loose from the tranny I spun it back and forth and there seems to be a lot of play. I had noticed a noise(clunk) when I would accelerate and let off and accelerate again that seemed to come from the differential. How much freespin should the driveshaft have between forward and reverse? Could it need to be reshimmed? Or something else? Thanks in advance

Something on the order of .030 inches measured at the ring gear with the pinion held steady. Yours sounds exessive, but I can't see what yours looks like. Get a DVD on Ebay and read up on it.
