It prevents the valve from closing. That is pretty much it. I have not noticed one wit of difference in warmup. That has been the report from virtually every post I have read on the subject. I unplugged mine a couple of months ago and it will never be replugged if I can prevent it. If your's is giving you trouble that is the easiest fix you will ever find.
