EPA regulation mixing motor oil with diesel fuel

Ran across this while doing other research for a VO laws data page. Just thought it was interesting.

from EPA Chapter 40

Sec. 80.522 May used motor oil be dispensed into diesel motor vehicles or nonroad diesel engines?

No person may introduce used motor oil, or used motor oil blended
with diesel fuel, into the fuel system of model year 2007 or later
diesel motor vehicles or model year 2011 or later nonroad diesel engines
(not including locomotive or marine diesel engines), unless both of the
following requirements have been met:
(a) The vehicle or engine manufacturer has received a Certificate of
Conformity under 40 CFR part 86, 40 CFR part 89, or 40 CFR part 1039 and
the certification of the vehicle or engine configuration is explicitly
based on emissions data with the addition of motor oil; and
(b) The oil is added in a manner and rate consistent with the
conditions of the Certificate of Conformity.

Why would anyone with an '07 mix used motor oil with their #2?

It isn't supposed to be to dillute fuel and save money. Lots of OTR rigs have a setup that sends crankcase oil intot he fuel system, which serves several purposes.

1.) YOu continue adding clean crack oil to the crankcase at every stop, therefore dilluting contaminants and extending change intervals.
2.) The oil lubricates fuel system components.

This is not an attempt to burn an alternative fuel to save money, it is a scheme to extend parts life and service intervals.

it actually makes sense when you look at it that way....
