filter replacement time

Hi guys

Next week I will be changing all my filters, oil, both fuel, air and maybe the tranny filter.
I searched for the process to drain and change the water/fuel filter but could not find it. Any tips or trick to changing the 2 fuel filters or the tranny filter.

Let the oil drain out to the engine pan, remove the oil filter canister and remove the filter. Replace the canister cap, close the drain and fill the crank case with 14 qts of oil and run the engine for a bit. Shut off and add oil if necessary. The two fuel filters are not a big deal, but they are messy. The HCFM is located on the driver's frame rail. Let the fuel out of the plug (about a qt and half ) and them remove the cap and replace the filter. Change the one located on the engine and cycle the key on and off a few times (you will hear the fuel pump hummmm) and start the truck. That is about it in a nut shell.

what year and ENGINE ?

on the 6.0L i agree w/ mr. dave...'cept the 14qt...i put 13 in mine and
then start it...ive never typically put more than 13.5 qts in mine...too
MUCH oil and youll get some surging goin' down the interstate.

theres a brass plug on the HFCM (frame rail, under the drivers door area...
its the heater fuel conditioner module or something)...i forget the allen
(or hex) head size but a LONG reach one will allow you to reach up and
OVER the front drive shaft (if youve got 4x4)

a funnel in a jar or a flared jar...i use a vase i gave my wife :oops: will help
you get a "lip" (of the funnel) under the hfcm / drain plug

let it drain til it stops...then take the filter cap off the HFCM and remove
the filter (i find that its helpful to wad up some rags or paper towels
under the hfcm along the frame rail to catch the drips/run off as you
open the filter cap & remove the filter.

then replace the filter & make sure the brass drain plug is snug.

then change the fuel filter up on top of the engine.

to PRIME the system after changing the filters...TURN THE KEY ON,
BUT DO NOT CRANK OR START THE ENGINE...listen to the pump run
and shut off (about 30sec) do this a couple 4 times...then start the
engine...should idle smooth and NOT smoke.

oh crap now i see dave already told you this...sorry

on the trans filter (for the 6.0l, torque shift auto)...its a 22mm
socket...and that filter "canister" will be on tighter than...well tight.
i had to use an air hammer (becareful not to twist the trans lines
feeding the filter)

make SURE you have cardboard down and a catch pan (oil pan works
well)...then dump the filter and housing into the catch pan.

replace the filter AND the o ring (dont skip the o ring part...or itll
leak...ask me how i know).

set the new trans filter in the can and slowly soak the filter w/
fords synt. trans fluid...the tp paper rolled filter will absorb quite a
bit of fluid...once youre satisfied (dont try to fill the filter housing,
itll jsut spill when you spin it on)...put the filter and housing back on
the thread (dont cross thread the thing...they used pretty find threads
on the trans filter).

interesting bit about the remove fuel from the filter base (fuel filter on
top of motor)...ive NEVER done that...cant see the point in it either.

filter change

hello boys

this weekend I changed all the filters, oil 2 fuel and the external tranny filter.

I was suprised to see the sludge in the tranny filter. The fluid looked and smelled fine but the filter was balck. 9000 miles.

the fuel filter was brown too. The filter in the pump assembly had a little sediment in the bowl.

the oil filter I used the first time was a high effiency one. When I pulled it out the cap which snaps into the top of the filter, stayed in the factory cap. I didnt realize it until I had compared it to a few filters that I had. The fram and ford OEM filter dot not have the snap in piece. The other one I had which I forget the brand had the snap in cap.

I wonder why they are different.

Anybody have any good ideas on the tranny fluid change procedure, other than let the stealership do it?

The old crack the pan and wear a gallon or two always works, but, uh... this stuff really stinks...
