Help with HPOP upgrade

I have been looking at upgrading my HPOP to the 17* pump but I have found that I will have to some drilling and plugging of holes on my pump resevoir because the 17* pumps don't have the check valve. If I understand this right it will cause drain back causing hard starting after several days of sitting. Is there anyway to get a 17* pump for my truck with out having to do the mods.

Change out the reservoir to the late model style or..........buy a PULSE

Can I change just the resevoir or do I also need to change the timing cover. A pulse would be great but I would bet I will have a hard time talking my wife in to letting me buy one.
