Hello guys,

I am new to the forum, and new to Ford Powerstrokes. I just picked up a 99.5 F-350 w/7.3. It has a noise (fairly loud growling) coming from the rear of the engine. I isolated all of the accessories to eliminiate them. When you rev the engine to about 1500 RPM the noise goes away. You can hear it most prominately throught the front wheel wells. Could this be the turbo going bad, or a problem with the trans.? The truck has 102,000 miles on it. Any advice you guys could give would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

man, hard to tell from description..
if you dumped the belt off to eliminate anything belt-driven, that don't leave much..

I'd think a turbo you'd be able to feel the vibration through the housing..

Is it cold when it starts doing this? If it is, it might be the ebpv closing to warm the engine up.

Y,yes it growls in park, and then goes away about 1500 rpm. Could it be the TC?

Torque convertors were a problem with the 99's. IIRC, A method of isolating the problem was to ground the lockup wire with the truck running in park. If the noise went away when the TC locked up, you'd found where the problem was.

Thanks for the info! Where might i find this wire, so I can test it?

If the TQ is the problem, would you recommend rebuilding or replacing the trans?

What is the best reasonable aftermaket rebuilt trans.?

Thanks again.
