New Season in Diesel Engine Tech
With spring arriving this month, many things are new and changing. Though not usually associated with spring, diesel motor oil is undergoing a significant change to meet new emissions standards that take effect in 2007.
New Named Oil Spec
The diesel motor oil specification, previously referred to as Proposed Category 10 or PC-10, has now been officially designated as API CJ-4.
This new oil is being formulated for 2007 model year heavy-duty on-highway diesel engines and is scheduled to take effect in October of this year.
A Giant Technology Leap
API CJ-4 will provide a giant technology leap in terms of wear, soot and oxidation control that go beyond the current standard set by CI-4 PLUS. These performance improvements will benefit current engines as well as the 2007 models including the ability to better handle high temperatures, increased soot handling capabilities and deposit control.
Stringent Tests
There are 10 stringent industry engine tests and six lab bench tests that oils must pass to qualify for the new performance category. Each test is designed to evaluate specific attributes of the oil and to measure its performance.
At Shell, we expect to meet the higher CJ-4 standard ahead of the anticipated October effective date.
Shell has already developed oil products for use in other parts of the world that have similar requirements to CJ-4. We are using this expertise to develop products to meet the new standards in North America.
