Greetings all -

I have been reading up on full flow and bypass oil filters.

I have tried to read up on the other various forums (bobistheoilguy, thedramastop, etc...). I respect the OilFuard and MotorGuard users, they are capable filters but too spendy for me. Like deertac, I think I am a bit more frugal than most. I have a 2000 7.3 PSD.

The EaBP-100 filter from Amsoil looks good, but I really don't care for Amsoil and am hoping to find an alternate solution.

Has anyone looked into something like the Caterpillar Advanced Efficiency Hydraulic Filters?

Looking at some of the Cat P/N's and crossing them to the Wix Interchage to see some stats-

Cat 102-2828, Wix 51496 is a 3u Nominal, Beta ration "2/20/75=2/3/". Its a 4x9 filter. I think this is a PALL filter.
Cat 126-1814, Wix 57397 is a 3u Nominal, Beta ratio of 20/75=3/4. Its a 3x9 filter.

These 2 filters look interesting. Is anyone familiar with this group of Cat filters and their uses? Any ideas on cost? I really need to get my hands on a Cat book to see what they are all about but I was hoping that someone out there has better knoweldge and experience than I.

It also occurs to me that we routinely deal with 2u filters- our fuel filters! I know for example the Cat 1R-0750 is is like $10 and a 2u spin on fuel filter. It has lots of capacity for its small size. Why don't we use a fuel filter element to bypass filter engine oil? Wouldn't diesel fuel be chemically more aggressive than engine oil?

Lastly, does anyone have any first hand experience with the newer Fleetguard Venturi line of filters? Any UOA numbers to look at? They were referenced here and on the other sites little while ago but little follow up info. I found their technical paper a bit confusing. Their website sucks for ease of info. The way I understand it is that there is a finer mesh stacked disk assmebly that will 'bypass filter' in the oil stream. Is this filter physically bigger? It's not a true bypass bit seems to accomplish the same thing. Is my understanding of it right?

I have a Frantz PT filter on my 04 F-350 it works great. I am in the process of putting a Frantz TP filter on my 02 Ketta TDI I haven't had time to build a bracket for it yet. Seems everytine I get a chance to work on it the wife is gone running the kids somewhere. The Frantz and Oil Guard filters are very inexpensive to maintain and in theory will filter down to 1u. The oil in the truck stays almost as clean as the day you put it in. The smaller TP Frantz will fit under the hood but the TP has to be changed out about 2K to 3K mikes. The PT Frantz will last about 5K before needing to be changed I have this filter mounted to the frame under the driver seat.

Cat info

I am surprised too on the lack of responses on this.

I talked with one of the filter specialists at Cat. He is curious about this appilcation too. Fuel filters were a no go based on media, he did no think that it would hold up. "It's not recommended, but are welcome to try it"

An interesting aside, he said that oil rating filters below 4u and fuel below 2u is inappropriate and not physically possible. Manufacturer claims of <4u are based on 'testing' and are not consistent or accurate. Attached is an tech doc he forwarded to me- it is not a smoking gun, but stated Cat's position on filteration ratings and that they will not publish ratings, but provide them on request.

I have had my Oil Guard for 4 years but since you want an inexpensive alternative look at THIS . I have no experience with it but in theory it may be what you're looking for. :dunno
