Problems with powersteering, and brakes....not fluid

I'm having some serious problems with my power steering as well as brakes. The power steering has all but gone out making this thing all but impossible to park and has a serious whine whenever I try to turn it. Also the brakes have a similar whine whenever the pedal is pushed beyond a certain point. Fortunately they work fine though. I checked both fluid levels and they seem fine, they may be a bit low but not serious.

the brakes and steering both work off the power steering pump, possibly just a bad pump or fluid contaminated,

check:
-PS fluid level and quality
-PS hoses for kinks, or any other restriction

as 01platinum stated, the pump could be bad but you want to check everything else before you throw an expensive pump in there.

Or a slipping belt.

Anybody know where I can find a write-up thats shows the steps to change out the PS pump?

siphon the reservoir 1st !

I installed a new pump and the situation is certainly better but the steering still a bit hard; also the brakes and steering still have a whine.

I had to put a new pump on my 99 sd and the brakes where still acting weird for a week or two afterwards...

As you drive it around any trapped air will work out of the system. Check the fluid level top when needed.
