Hope someone can help me out here. I just got my first diesel pickup. It is a mechanical pump non turbo automatic trans. I plan on towing with it and would like to know if I need a pyrometer. I have been told to get one. The guy before me towed with this truck and didn't have one. Someone told me you only need one on a turbo. If I have the pump turned up will I need one then. I am consernd that on a grade with a load that I will get too hot and damage the engine. If I need a pyrometer where would I hook it up at.

Any thoughts and ideas are greatly appreciated 6.9

Yes by all means get a pyrometer. You can drill the driver's exhaust manifold and tap it to secure the probe. The two wires from the pyro go to the guage and other than power, that is about it. I would have a pyro in any diesel I owned, and I did.
