Picked up a rear end whine recently. Comes on at about 65mph and gets softer the faster you go. Sound goes away if you find the right throttle position to float the drive train - remove presure. No vibrations. Gear lube is topped off. Axle bearings look good on each end.

I'm thinking carrier bearings or pinion bearing. Anyone changed these out? Cost? Special tools?

Thanks ahead for the insite!

I had the same problem last year and it turned out to be bad pinion bearings. I had the "whine" issue as well as a pretty bad vibration that you could feel coming up through the floor. Found the pinion bearings to be pitted but not completely shot. Also checked the carrier bearings in the axles and they were a bit worn as well. I have read alot of posts about driveshaft angle issues with Excursions also. I have driveline whine issues at lower speeds when on and of the throttle - not sure what to do about that. Good luck.

I wil let everyone know what I find when I get it appart.
