Regearing advatages??

I am looking to reduce the rpm's I am running at cruising at higher speeds, 65/70 and hopfully save some fuel. With the 488 gears I am running at 2500+ rpm at 65 mph. If I was to change to 410's would I see a substantial decrease in engine speed and in turn fuel economy?

YOu may see a ten percent increase in mileage. You could go to 3.73 gears if you really want to see a decrease in RPM's. I don't know it you tow a lot of heavy loads or not. If you do, then go for the 4.10's.

Thanks for th reply. Does anyone have any RPM numbers to share on a dually with 410's running at 65 and 70? Thanks.

i read a article were the owner installed 3.08 gears for fuel mileage. with an intake and 4" exhaust and a econo tune he said he got around 26 mpg. it was also 2 wheel drive and a manual and lowered

Cheif2, I run 3:73's with a six speed and see about 1900 rpm at 65 mph. I have driven a six speed with 4:10's and the rpm was a little over 2000 rpm. If I can remember right, it was like about 2100. I haven't driven an automatic with 4:10's though.

Thanks for the info. The question now is:

1. If I regear to a 4:10 will I see a considerable difference in the pulling performance? I'm looking at pulling a 5'r that may be up to 19K.

2. What will the cost be to regear?

3. Woud I be better off installing a Gear Vendor unit and have the best of both worlds with the 4:88 pulling capabilty when needed and the lower RPM's when running empty. Big $$ 3,000.00 to install is the down side!
