Olin does NOT make Winchester powders, JL. Hodgdon does. This is a recent change, according to their "under construction" website. Olin is known for Ball Powder and 231 is a Ball Powder. Go figure.

Dave

yeah you're right.. I heard that somewhere and at the time didn't pay it any mind..

plus I see Hodgdon is now listed as a distributor of VV powders.. makes ya wonder...

your slow-er shotgun powders are best for the heavy-bullet .45's

Unless you have a compact, like a Combat Commander, then you would want to speed up the burn a bit to "relatively" reduce muzzle flash..

use like Blue-Dot, Herco, 800X, Longshot, etc
for shorter barrels & lighter loads: Red-Dot, 700X, Clays, AA#2

I pretty much use VihtaVouri in loads I do for myself. In my .45 I use 7.0gr N350 and a WW primer

thanks
spent half the night setting up the dillion on the bench and laying out all the goodies
hopefully tomorow the primers arrive
i couldnt believe fedex dropped off four packages on saturday
this is going to be a cool hobby

I reload for 45acp. I have a Dillon 550B. It is well built, dependable, and easy to use and setup.
Plus their monthly catalog is awesome!

I have a Colt Commander btw. :)

If you go to Dillons web site (Dillon Precision: Reloaders, Reloading Equipment, Bullet Reloading, Bullet Reloaders) you can download the owners manual to see for yourself. When you buy a reloader it comes with a VHS/DVD which makes setup and using the machine much easier.

If you only reload handgun and know for sure you will only do that, the Square Deal model is a very good choice. It's limited to only handgun, but I know a lot of people who own them and they are very well made.

Keep in mind, these things pay for themselves quickly, but you will find that you will shoot many times more rounds than you did before reloading.

I reload my 45acp for about 5 bucks for 50 rounds. Sometime as low as 4.00. Just depends on how much I can get powder, bullets, and primers for.

I never buy brass because I seem to always have plenty and bring home more empty casings than I shoot from the range. There's always hundreds laying around that no one wants. :)

regarding powders- You will find Winchester W231 is superb for the 5" Colt 1911 as well as the Commander model. 231 burns clean and is very consistent shot to shot. It is one of the most widely used powders for 45acp. It's one of the least costly too.

Have fun!

That is why I started using it. I like and never had a problem in over 11 years of reloading. It is very consistent.

FWIW, I had a Springfield M1911A1 IN MY HAND, and put it down and bought the Ruger P90.

If wishes were dollars...

Hey, nothing wrong with that-- if it's your hard earned money (and these things ain't cheap) make sure you buy what you like. I'm not crazy about the P90 ergonomics- but that's me. I love 1911 designs (as well as others - like the XD45) and they seem to fit my hand perfect. There's a lot of nostalgia behind the design too, and I'm sure that's what keeps them selling nearly 100 yrs later.
