My brother has a 2001 F250 7.3 4x4.

He had been getting 15 mpg with it since he purchased it. He knows I get 18+ with our 6.0. I asked him to turn on the cruise control at 2000 rpm and see what happens. He finally had some extra time, so he ran 200 miles at 2000 rpm and on cruise control. He told me he got 18.18 mpg. Both our trucks are stock from the factory. He has over 120,000 miles on his and loves it.
Conclusion is that I think all our trucks would get 18+ mpg if we used the cruise control at 2000 rpm assuming that we all have 3.73 gearing, driving on flat level dry pavement empty. It is $3.32 per gallon here on west coast, so every bit helps.

I get better mileage using my foot, so the cruise doesn't floor it to make the grade at exact speed. I stay under 2000 rpm also when I can.

The biggest part is showing some restraint. I find that easier to do with a stock truck. Something about having 400-500+hp at your foot makes you want to use it :)

at 2000 rpm, are you running at 70mph? thats what mine does, also get better fuel mileage when on cruise.

2000 rpm = 70 mph.

Yes, at 2000 rpm I am at 70 mph. Since I am retired, I am not an any hurry to get anywhere, so 70 mph in the slow lane will keep me from getting run over. I used to be a hot rodder when younger, and still have a 660 hp. Ford Falcon and a 240Z V8, so I have not given up on fast vehicles yet. I can relate to the guys that have 400 to 500 hp trucks, but I have learned over the years that high horsepower breaks things, and I paid to much money for this truck to tear it up.
I guess that is an old guy talking. If I were as young as most of you, I would probably do as you are doing, and have fun.
If I feel the urge, I get out of my truck, and fire up the Falcon.

Makes no difference on mine... 2k on the tach eats just as much fuel as 2250... I'm auto, so dunno if that make that much of a difference or not...

2250 rpm = 78.5 mph

Hey Kleetus;

Your peak torque curve might be near 2250 rpm explaining why you don't loose any mpg at the rpm compared to 2000 rpm. I'll give it a try on my truck and see what happens. I don't know when though, I have been so busy, I have not started my truck up in over two weeks.

I achieve 18mpg when I set my cruise control to keep the tachometer at the first mark to the left of 2000rpm mark which should be about 1750rpm. Vehicle speed indicated on my speedometer shows 61-62mph.

I travel in the far right lane all the time and even the big rigs try to move me out of the way.
