Servicing the tranny

i plan on servicing my trannsmission soon. I was told by someone that if its been along time since your tranny has been serviced, its better not to service it because of the sludge that has built up and sealed all the leaks. The previous owner of my truck kept excellent service records and took good care of the truck, but i cant find any records of the tranny being serviced.

Sounds a little crazy to me.

What do ya'll think?

Seems like you loose either way; tranny going bad or a leaking tranny. I would service it. I doubt it will leak. These are OLD wives tales.

you can't hurt it by changing the oil & filter.. if you flush it, make sure you use a flush chemical and run enough fluid through it you're SURE you got all the crud out...

there's an article out there somewhere that walks you through the flush procedure. doesnt say anything about using a flush additive though...

is that really necessary if you've kept up with it? ive got a 20 gallon pail of royal purple sitting in the garage ready to roll to flush it all out. didnt plan on using a flush additive. was just going to flush it via running the motor to pump out old fluid and then refill per the procedure.

ill do some googleing and see if i can find it.

Just use the fluid. You really don't need anything else.

20 gallons is a shatload of fluid..
4 or 5 gallons will do it..
