OK, so my buddy has a 04ish 4x4 duramax 2500 with tons of upgrades- intake, exhaust stacks, programmed, 6000 dollar auto transmission, much more i'm sure.

I'm not impressed though. its damn fast, but my seat-o-the-pants-ometer says I'm pulling harder in 3rd gear. I've got basic CAI, 4" exhaust, and a 5 position chip which i leave in the 50hp setting. My problem is this stick tranny couldn't shift through the gears fast enough to beat up an escort. If I try anything remotely resembling a quik shift on 2-3 I get grindage at best, nothing but free revving usually.

I have about 200k on it so if I got the tranny rebuilt would I see a big improvement? Or is that just the way it is? Do i need some kind of quik shifter like the do in the mustangs?

If it's got 200+ on it, you need to be nice to it. It's been good to you for a long time now and the ole gal is still hanging in there.LOL
I don't know enough about a stick to tell you, but I bet someone will be here before long that knows them well.

I use Red-Line, Full Syn ATF in my 6 speed. Makes for MUCH smoother shifting. From habit, I often slip shift (no clutch) between 4th, 5th and 6th, towing the 5r.. the full Syn basically eliminates the Notchy, "gota git it just right".. shifting.

A bit pricey but well worth the money, IMO. :dunno

You just have to much mass inside the tranny spinning at different speeds during a speed shift to make it happen as fast as like say a mustang. I think you can get a short throw shifter for one. That may help too. If you still have the stock clutch in it any more than the 50hp tune will make it slip during a hard shift. I put a south bend clutch in the 01 I had and that helped the shifting some too. Try to get you D-max buddy to do a 45-60mph rolling start against you. The old 7.3 did pull strong there.

I am with these guys on not being able to make a truck tranny speed shift. You can smooth out the shifts, but there is too much mass for speed shifting.

I'll give that Red-Line, Full Syn ATF a try. I guess I'm not looking for mustang slam through the gears shifting, but big joe called it- I have to get it just right or there's grindage/nothing. It's really picky.

My 7.3 would shift hard when the clutch was needing replacement. It didn't slip or anything like it. Much better when I got it replaced.

:):D I didn't mean to say a Synthetic ATF would allow "Speed Shifting". I totally agree.. these 6 speeds aren't designed or built for that.. but it does, IMO, make a noticable difference in the ease of shifting gears. Simple, Palm of the Hand stuff.. Less having to find that certian.. Notch.

I mainly use the Red-Line Syn. lubes, only cuz I've used them for years, in all kinds of gear boxes & difs, long term.. and never had a failure.

Other Synthetics may be equaly as good ?

I'm due for a clutch change and I'm going to swap to Redline when I do. Hopefully it will help some. I don't have any issues when driving normally but you aren't going to win any races off a dead stop for sure. Like f100 said, take him on rolling down the road. Mine will leave people in a cloud of smoke as we roll up a hill. Really surprises them.
