Any math wizards here? If I have 12,100 square feet of lawn is that a little over 1/4 acre? I think an acre is 43,560 square feet and if that is the case I should have .277 acres? 1/4 would be .25 so it is close. Are my figures correct? it has been too many years since I was in school.

I am thinking about a riding mower and I see they list them for how many acres they recommend using them for.

Yep--you're correct--your lawn is close enough to 1/4 acre that the small bit of difference doesn't really matter. Honestly, though, a riding mower for 1/4 acre would be some serious overkill, IMO. If your yard is relatively flat, buy a non-powered (i.e. you have to push it) walk-behind mower and get some exercise while mowing. If it's sloped, buy a self-driven walk-behind mower but either way, a riding mower for property that size is quite a waste.

We have a self-driven walk behind mower but I think the kids may be a little more interested in mowing the lawn if it had a steering wheel.

I am glad I actually figured the math right, now I can go to bed thinking I actually learned something in school :notworthy

Get the rider, just tell the wife that you are going to have 5,362.72 square cubits of lawn now and she'll give in.

Good thinkin... I have been drooling when we go to Home Depot and pass the John deers but I think I would settle for a Craftsman. I just picked up $1000 worth of flooring at Home Depot yesterday so I may be told that I spent my mower fund but the 5,362.72 cubit argument just may work.

Be carefull with the Craftsman. I bought a 21 hp model, the steering became loose, (wheel play), almost imediately and had been increasingly worse, (the gear is made of plastic, kinda like our door handles), now it has come completely apart. If you want a rider, save your money until you can get a good one. JMO.

I have been mowing my lawn with our push mower, (we have an acre of lawn, (glutten for punishment)). Am now looking at the Honda HRX's. Gives me a lot more exercise, and reason for more Beer. :D

Craftsman mowers just aren't as good as they use to be. Our self propelled push mower is a Craftsman. We purchased it new in 1998 and it is on its last leg. The front wheels are all tipped in and it takes about 1/2 cup of oil for every mowing. The oil smoke does help out with the mosquitoes though.
