Hello. I finally got around to buying the seal I think I need to stop a leak on the steering gear box. Leak is at the top plate. I can see to remove the four bolts that mount the plate, but what about the nut in the middle? From the blow up from F*rd, it looks to be a mount for the gear. Do I just mark the nut and remove, or do I need to do something special to keep everything in check? I really do not want to remove the gear unless I have too.

Thanks

The nut in the center of the cover is to set the lash in the gears. Do not remove it or play with it. It is set close enough for reassembly. Just remove the four on the corners of the cover and remove the cover. then you will have acess to the gears and seals. You will have to pull off the streeing arm to get the gear out of the box. Use a big gear puller to get it off.
