I just got my 1999 7.3L and the relative I bought it from told me the engine took 14 quarts of oil w/filter. When I called Ford to price an oil change, they told me it held 15 w/filter and so did Speedy Lube.
What's the real scoop?
Thanks

15 +/-. You may need to check the dipstick and make sure it is not one of the short-readers. I dont know what year that was an issue but it ran about 2 quarts low but said full.

The real scoop is fill it until your dipstick reads correctly. Use only a diesel rated oil and good premium filter. It will take 15+ qts IF you suck out the HPOP reservoir.

15 with the filter should put it right on the money.... good luck.
I only use 15w40 Rotella oil with Motorcraft filter # FL-1995 for the 7.3

Ford and all thequick lube places told me my early '99 takes 15 quarts but 14 puts it right on the full mark, 15 shows over full.

TXblue - how long have you been in Saginaw? I went to college with 3 or 4 guys that grew up there. That was in late 80s when I knew them.

I bought mine with 80k. It now has 178K. I have put the whole 4 gallons of Rotella T in it the whole time I have owned it (read 16 quarts) and my friend I bought it from did the same thing. No mechanical engine problems whatsoever.

Less oil.

I did find my owner's manual and it says to put it 14 quarts with a filter change. I guess I'll start there and check it to see if I need another quart. My build date on the truck was 6/98. So, that put's it in the early 1999 catagory.
Thanks for all the response. I'm sure I'll have more questions as time goes by.
