Update:

It turns out it was the fuel pump. after putting in a fresh one, the old ford is back to running on all 8. smooth idle, smooth acceleration, no smoke. Also checked the filter, it was good looked like it was just installed. Unfournately I have to cut loose the mounting bolts and fab up a new piece but it is re installed, just have to finish tightning a few things.

some tips for anyone else who has to go through this. first before even thinking of replacing pump, check fuel pressure be absolutely sure its not running. The 3 mounting bolts, if they strip, round off or have to be cut off, you'll have to use other bolts as they are not avaible as a seperate piece. If the mounting bracket is rusted in 2 pieces, the only way to get a new one, is either from a junk yard or from ford with the new pump. The OE pump (F81U9C407AA) is unbelieveably expensive, I was quoted $622.03 for it. Hopefully this aftermarket (airtex) holds up at least a little while.

Thanks everyone for your time and input, it is much apperciated.
