If you go to itp diesel. com and listen to its media center. There is a noticeable difference in the sound of the 03 6.0 and 04 and up 6.0. I also have a friend with an 03 6.0 and his turbo it significantly louder than my 05 6.0. Does anyone have any clue why this is?

03s had a different turbo on them. It was changed for 04s and then changed again for 05+ trucks. If you want that whistle then you'll have to get an 03 turbo and put it on your truck.

Most people seem to like the 03 models. I can't comment on which is better.

depends on what you are after. the 03 turbine wheel is a few mm larger w/10 vanes, while the 04 turbine is smaller and has 13 vanes.
there is a NOTICEABLE turbo lag increase with the 03 turbo, and the difference is maybe 10-20HP, in my opinion not enough to sacrifice the driveability around town.
03 sounds cooler, 04 makes more sense.
