Should you put the tires with the most tread on the front or the back?

my dad says, on the back, because you want the most tread on your drive tires.

i always thought on a pick-up/car, that you would want the most tread on your steering tires, for control/traction.

any thoughts?

if your running asphault...ifn I'm gonna have a tire go south, I want it to be a rear...far easier to control a rear blowout versus a front. As I recall, I did that even when I did a lot of 4X4n when I was a bit younger. There's my $.02

Be well!

i forgot to mention, that my dads line of thinking, was on our 18 wheelers.

he was telling me that you want your best drive tires on the rear drive axle, and of course, your steering tires on a big truck are gonna be a specific steer tire. gotta keep those steer tires in good shape, if one goes and you are loaded, more times than not, your in the ditch or the trees.

one reason i was asking, i just bought some new to me tires and wheels.

the tires are good year 275/65/18 wrangler AT/S.

two of the tires have real good tread, whilst the other two are alittle less.

I run the lower tires on the rear, like you said more control with more meat on the front. I thought there is less chance of hydroplane with my better tires on the front.

Definately put the best tires on the front.
You might be able to control your vehicle if a front wheel blows, but how about your wife?
The below is not a good situation::doh:
Your wife is driving on a two lane road, and a large truck is coming at her in the next lane, when the left front wheel blows, ,pulling her vehicle to the left...

Sooo for my two cents,,, I would put the best tires on the front.:D

thats what i always believed too, so, thats where they are, on the front.

just had them balanced, and they look great.

gonna have to do the door seal mod tho, these tires are kinda loud.

here is my 2cents..
bama; if you had a front wheel drive CAR i put the best on the front (steer/traction tire)

as for on a truck; i'd put them on the rear(traction) - unless 4wheelin..

so your dad is 50% right each way....

hey, when you rotate you will be putting them in the back anyway....:roflmao :thumbs

here is mine:

I have always put more tread on the front...but the backwoods highways that i drive are nothing like the interstate or city streets that some of you may drive, so better control is a necessity.

I rotate mine with every oil change and the front seem to wear more also. But as red 6 0-no said your going to rotate anyway.
