When the temp senser failed in my truck the stock guage went to zero and the cheack trans indicator came on the display. It may be different with the 03-04 trucks. If I remember correctly the sensor is under the valve body.FWIW the stock guage has always gone half way after a few min even though the optix does not even read 100deg.

I dont think the sending unit is that expensive. You know about contacting Steve on SVTP to get the part at cost +10%. Not sure how much this is affecting your trucks drivability.

no dont know 'bout steve or svtp...ill look into it.

my truck so FAR is drivable...drove it this weekend
and the problem happened once...drove back to the
airport <where the truck spends more time now than
in my own driveway>....no problem.

good info, ill await to hear confirmation from others that they experianced
this same symptom <gauge to zero>...i knew the sending unit was inside
just didnt know where...shouldnt be a problem for me to drop the valve
body & replace it <if i can find more info on it>.

admittedly ive never paid much attn to the factory trans gauge <since
i have autometer on the a-pillar>...ive always thought the factory
gauge took LONGER to come to the mid point than what i saw the
other morning...i mean the truck wasnt running/moving 5min and the
gauge was just past the mid point

Much ado over nothing! Just quit driving it home from the airport. Problem solved! :tounge

Hope you get it figured out. Intermitten problems of the random variety like this are the worst!

Perfect time to put on a deep finned pan. Little extra capacity, run a little cooler. Mag-hytech, PML, plenty of choices. Your gonna have it apart. Why not?

When my sender went bad, the stock trans temp buried itself, the check guage light came on, the tow-haul light would flash, and the trans would go into limp mode. They replaced the sensor, problem fixed.

Thats what I'm running, Bush. PML coated. Extra 5 quarts. Well built and reasonable price. Good luck with the temp. switch. BTW, that fluid has a smell you won't forget.
