I have 117,000 on the original transmission. The problem I am having is that the converter only locks up when it wants to. Like this morning, the cruise set at 70 the converter would not lock up and the rpms kept surging 200-300 rpms. But once I exited off of the highway and got back on the pedal it locked up fine for the rest of the morning. Called the transmission shop and he said tohave my mechanic check this tps. Called my mechanic and he said that when the tps goes bad it normally makes the whole truck go carzy. But I am going to have him run the scanner anyhow. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

The TPS is your fuel pedal. if the TPS was messing up then you'd have surging all the time.

Double check all of the transmission connectors make sure they haven't come loose and check pins for corrosion. If memory serves me correctly your banks trans command also requires some changing of the factory trans wiring so I'd suspect those modified areas first.

my honest guess is that your tc is beginning to go bad and replacement would be adviseable.

I'm not real familiar with the transcommand (or any of Banks products for that matter) but could it be part of the problem here?

Don't get me wrong the transmission is not in the best shape. Over the past 2 months I noticed that my tranny went from good hard shifts to just kinda sliding in to each gear. Just curious to see what yall think. I was trying to get away from $2500 overhaul at the moment because money is really tight. But I guess I may not have much of a choice

When was your last tranny service? Full fluid and filter change? Sounds like your valve body is getting sluggish.

Ok guys, heres the deal. On the way home yesterday and to work this morning no problems at all. Every once in a while the converter will kinda slide into lock up instead locking up right away. Hope yall understand what I am trying to say. Thanks.

If your shifts are getting rather sluggish then you have a possible bandaid for around $500 if you do the work yourself but that's an expensive bandaid that may not work. The bandaid is remove the banks transcommand (it's not friendly with shift kits) install the trangso tugger kit and replace the torque converter with a stock converter for a superduty (theirs is stronger than ours)

Like 95 stroker said if you haven't recently changed all of the fluid & the filter then that'd be an excellent place to start.

As far as the rebuild when I had mine out and installed the transgo kit ≈$100 (rebuilds valvebody) I checked with a local trans shop and they said they could do a stock rebuild for $1000 using the converter that I had also bought.

If money is tight then you've got 3 options see if a local trans shop will diagnose it for you and tell you what you need to do, if they tell you rebuild trans then find a shop that will do "bench work" and you pull the trans take it to them and they rebuild it you do the installation. Around here the trans shops don't like bench work comming from individuals because they assume anyone doing it for themselves is incompetent. second option is to just rebuild the sucker and be done with it. The third option is the tugger & t/c replacement.

Can you guys tell me were you buy this upgraded converter, is it a stock one or a aftermarket? Does it perform the same as stock[stall low/high] or does it feel the different?

Click the UCC.com link in my sig, thats where my convertor came from, but there are several different companies to choose from. Precision, Suncoast, ATS to name a few. Be ready to pony up some cash for a good TC though.
