Trans finally took a crap a few weeks ago. I have since bought a reman from the guys at Powerstrokeshop.com. Upon flushing the cooler in the radiator to rid it of its metal flakes, I discovered that it is impossible to get all of it out. I have to replace the Oil to Air cooler for warranty anyways so my question is, is there any way to replace the air to oil cooler with one that can do the job of both? whats this I hear of a V-10 cooler? I hate to install that little punk filter and hope the leftover metal doesnt make it back to the new trans. Also, correct me if I am wrong, but isnt the rear most cooler line the return from the coolers? Thanks.

The V-10 cooler is slightly larger and direct bolt in. You will have to do some plumbing but it is not difficult. As for the return/supply lines, I don't remember. I am thinking about going to an electric fan/cooler. Backing up a heavy trailer really heats it up.

If you have a mid-2000 or newer truck, you have both an OIL TO WATER and a OIL TO AIR cooler. It goes tranny, to radiator, to cooler, back to tranny. (which you have found out already)

If you wanted to be 100% sure, you'd need to change your radiator too, or cut it out of the circuit (which is what your asking).

To be honest, I *really* like the Oil to Water cooler. Oil to water is far more efficient than oil to air.

I would keep the OTW cooler, replace your OTA with the v-10 cooler ANYWAYZ, and then install the Magafine filter on the return line.

The filter *IN* your tranny is only good to like 200 microns. You may as well not have it at all with a rating like that!! Whereas the magnafine is good to something like 25 microns for NON ferrous metals, and SUB-MICRON for ferrous metals because it has a magnet to catch that stuff.

16 bucks. Cheap insurance, change it once a year. Im sure it will catch anything in your coolers.

I guess I will use the inline filter that came with the reman unit at first. I was just concerned about getting all the metal out of my OTA cooler. Whats the best place top get the V10 cooler? Should I just call up the dealer? Thanks

GOOD AFTERMARKET TRANNY COOLER HERE.

Thats from Bob Riley's site, its a very good unit. If you are going to go aftermarket try to aim for a stacked plate cooler, they are much more efficient that the tube and fin type. The stacked plate coolers have a lower pressure drop and a more efficient heat rejection capacity.

Tranny Cooler

For what it's worth, I did the upgrade to the V-8/V-10 tranny cooler a while back. I have a pic of the two side by side for comparison in my webshots.

I thought the OEM OAC's were stacked plate :dunno When I did my MonsterBox I went with the V-10 cooler, like $99 if memory serves me right. I have yet to see my tranny break 190F and like 75% of the time it's under 150F. Very impressive as I don't have the OWC on my early 99'. :(
