What was the ambient temp? Sounds high to me. I never had that even towing an 8500# RV.

around 70 degress, but that was only for a little bit, yesterday i towed my friends 27 foot Formula boat, about 8500 lbs and it never went above 180, maybe it was just being goofy the other day.

I would be installing an additional cooler if it were me. With the trans pan and additional cooler in my truck if I pull 8,000lbs, in 80* weather (full size truck and trailer) I rarely see temps over 150 degree's. The cooler you can get your tranny to run the longer it will last. Just my 2 cents.

I run about 80 deg above ambient, give or take pulling about 16500#. 8K on the Excursion and 8.5K on the Toy Hauler. All I have is a BTS trans and 6.0 cooler. IIRC, it was 90 and some change with the stock trans and the 6.0 Cooler.

My fifth wheel is about 16500 with total being 24500 and I run about 150 pulling the fifth wheel at 70 MPH. The highest I have seen is 165 on a 90 degree's day.

The guys that are seeing 225 and up should be using synthetic ATF. It will withstand a full 100 degrees F higher temperature without degrading. I have seen 185 once while towing my fiver.

My truck with stock coolers would run 180*+ in the summer unloaded. Now that is reading the internal PCM sensor which will show a higher temp than the port mounted one that most use. Until recently my truck did not tow. On my 2nd trip with the new TT I hit 210* in 70* temps on very mild rolling hills. I have since installed a Tru-Cool additional cooler. We will tow to Arkansas this weekend, so we will see how the temps are now. My around town temps are between 30-50* cooler now.
