I have had to do my tranny a couple of times now. The first time we took the tranny out it was because the TC had ballooned and was slipping badly. I was going to only change the TC at the time, but upon inspection of the internals, coast clutches and OD were toast. So we machined the pressure plates to install extra clutches in all the gears and machines the coast clutch drum to go from 2 to 4 clutches, installed a tugger kit and increased line pressure by 35%. Added a Suncoast converter and the performance was awsome.

15K later the truck started to learch at stop signes, so the trans came out again. The problem this time was the center carrier bearing ball cage gave it up and let the balls loose int he trans. This was interesesting because the balls bouncing around would randomly bind and apply a clutch and you never knew which one it might be. Replaced the bearing and replaced parts as needed and added a Precision triple lock converter.

I am not a tranny guy, but rather was a helper in the process each time. Seems to me if you find somebody who knows how to do it, you can have your trans rebuilt and be just fine or buy one from one of the vendors.

What was the price to overhaul it yourself, with help? And any suggestions of what overhaul kits to install so I don't have to overhaul it twice?

I have a John Woods trany and I couldn't be happier. I put a post on TDS in the 7.3 u/a it might be a few pages back it was called * John Woods does it again *
BTW I just won a DHRA race and I credit my consistancy to his trany. Out of 20+ trucks, two were fords, and one of the fords got the WIN!

John Woods................. isnt he a local builder in Southern California? For some reason that name rings a bell, and its prolly due to a thread over at TDS?
