Friends 05 6.0 is in the dealers shop and has had an intermittent squeal from under hood. I read codes before he took it in and got under boost and over boost codes. Shop said bearings in turbo shot and not serviceable. They want to put on a new turbo without even looking at old one. Are the bearings replaceable? If not would an aftermarket turbo be a better option.

Yes they can be replaced, but probably not by the dealer. You want to be very careful that you get the equivalent turbo as these guys have the variable vanes on the intake side of the wheel.

They can be rebuilt, but you need to find a reputable turbo rebuilder. Dealers dont deal with that, they just slap in a new one.
The variable vane is on turbine side (exhaust)

If it is squeeling the wheel is probably contacting the housing.
