I drove down to Denver Int'l yesterday to pick up Maggie and so far I LOVE the Tymar intake + 4" MBRP exhaust combo. EGT's dropped by ~ 100* so now I can cruise at 550-700 degrees instead of 650-800 doing highway speeds (75-80 mph with occasional short bursts to pass) and I'm pretty sure I got maybe 0.5-1.0 mpg better. I forgot to write down the odometer reading before I left so I can't be sure but the needle definitely dropped less on this trip than on Sunday's trip before the mods, even though I filled to the same point.

The only concern I have is this--when flooring the go-pedal to merge onto the interstate, the boost would rise to ~19-20 lbs, I'd hear a really faint fluttering sound (kind of like the turbo flutter noise from the tailpipe), then boost would drop suddenly down to 6 pounds or so. Is this the compressor stall/surge I've heard so much about and do I need to get a Wicked Wheel to fix it or is there some other method to prevent this happening? FWIW, staying off the accelerator isn't an option since the I-25 on-ramps in town here are about 6 inches long and you don't have any room to accelerate before merging into traffic. I REALLY like the way the intake sounds and performs, unlike the choked-off factory setup, so I want to stay with it, but if what was happening isn't a good thing, I want to get it fixed.

Ditto on the WW set-up.

Do you feel like heading down here to help me with it? I could probably handle it myself, but sometimes help with projects like that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I would feed you fine domestic economy beers for the assistance...:p :p :D

Sure--when getting that far into the engine, it is nice to have someone else around with a working vehicle in case you need to run out for more nuts/bolts, tools, beer, etc...

Do you have a date in mind JV? I'm most likely pretty bowed up until after the first of the year. I've never done turbo work before but practicing on yours could be fun.

It wouldn't be until after Christmas, at the earliest, so I can see how much damage Christmas does to my VISA bill.

It doesn't seem like it would be that complicated of a job, but sometimes, in addition to having an extra set of hands, it helps to have someone around for reassurance that I'm not goobering something up. Can you think of any other jobs that should be done while I'm at it (WW install)? I know, that's a VERY dangerous phrase ("while I'm at it"), but sometimes it makes more sense to clump maintenance together. Here is what I'm thinking of doing:

1) Replacing turbo pedistal O-rings. While I've got the turbo out, I might as well exchange them instead of trying to squeeze more life out of the stockers.

2) Pulling both intercooler tubes and cleaning them out. Even though I've relocated my CCV, there is probably still some residue in them.

3) Installing new intercooler boots (at the Y-pipe and between the intercooler and input/output pipes) since winters up north here can't be doing them any good and they're bound to leak eventually

Have you read BIG JOE's write up on the WW install yet? Pulling the turbo isnt necessary, this job can be done with the turbo in the truck. But the rest of your stuff looks like prudent items to address at that time. Look into the "hump hose" kit for your intercooler also.
