When you buy a used truck. After reading so many posts, I am realizing there are so many things that we need to do now before they become a problem in the future.

So I am looking for a list of things that I should do now.

I had no idea about cleaning the FR screen. Gonna do that...
Now I see something about the fuel bowl....gotta do that
Then I read somewhere about a coolant filter from Bob??? Who can tell me about that?

I want to keep this truck for a very long time, so please help put together a list of things I need to get out there and get done ASAP.

Mind you, we have put new injector cups in, new o-rings on the injectors, new VC gaskets, new UVC harness (all 4), new ends on the harness, gutted the EBPV, new glow plugs.

So I am hear to learn, and all your pros, I hope your out there to teach us that want to learn.

Also, I am in VA and would love to find some other members close by. Might come in handy knowing us since we are builders and have a really cool Gehl skidsteer and some really cool tools, might even can work out some trade on work if someone could help us on the truck when we get in over our heads! :D

If you're doing lots of towing, which it sounds like you will, you will want a good transmission cooler (is yours an automatic?) The tru cool 28k GVW is what many of us are running and it'll help keep the tranny temps in check. I picked mine up from www.bulkpart.com along with a screw on external filter that's between the built in radiator cooler & my new cooler

From your other posts I gather that you're looking @ possibly adding power (isn't that inevetable) later in which cases boost, tranny temp (auto), & Pyro gauges would be needed. I'd definately recommend the tranny temp guage no matter what you're looking to do.

Thanks to my tranny temp guage I caught temps climbing faster than normal indicating slippage earlier than the tranny will tell you it's slipping so I was able to replace my torque converter & install a shift kit to help prolong the life of my tranny w/o rebuilding the whole thing.

The truck was originally an automatic and was changed to a 5 speed/OD...
It currently has a boost/pyro and the tranny gauge which of course doesnt work on this truck.

We are going to get the coolant filter and put that in, I think with the problems we just fixed that would be a great asset to have on the truck.

Since the truck is a stick, do we still need a tranny cooler?

What do you guys think about the additional oil filter? I don't know the exact terminology for it.

Are you referring to an oil bypass filter? I have an Oilguard bypass system on my truck. It's mounted under driver's door and bolted to the frame. This filter I change every 8K and it super cleans the oil to 1 micron which is 1/10 the particle size trapped in a spin on filter. There are a few different manufacturers who sell these filters...Amsoil & Franz to name two others.

I took off my fuel bowl yesterday and the bottom was full of sand and gunk. Once I got it cleaned (some was loose sand and some was stuck on) there were 3 large (deep) pitted areas and several smaller (shallow) areas patched them with JB Weld. You might want to check yours out as I understand that these bowls are not cheap. Others with more experience and knowledge can tell you more about this. Also, I found that on my truck on the passenger side frame rail by the radiator I had a hose that was rubbing on the frame and eventually developed a leak.
If you are up on the engine to remove the fuel bowl or work on something else, becareful not to bust the little outlet nipple where the hose connects and goes to the overflow container from the radiator. It is on the passenger side of the radiator at the top.
I carry a spare CPS, fuel filter, and serpentine belt. I have never had the need to use any of these in an emergency, but have read too many post where the owner wished they had had one of these. If your cruise control acts up you likely have a brake light out (someone else confirm this pls).
I keep up the maintenance as best I can and keep my oil changed and the truck has been good to me with just the usual stuff needing to be replaced, i.e. altenator, batteries, water pump, fuel pump, light bulbs etc.

I had that same problem when I first got the truck (at 105K). Replaced all the radiator hoses. Where it rubbed, I put a cut open piece of the old radiator hose around that hose area and wrapped it securely with tie wraps.

I repaired mine in the exact same manner, no problems since.

well since I struck out earlier here's an attempt again...

since you're 5 speed find out if you have a single mass or dual mass flywheel. OE is dual mass and they are a flywheel designed to wear out (stoopid)

I'm always overly compuslive and change every fluid on a vehicle when I get it and convert all of my vehicles to dot4 Brake fluid partially due to driving in the city where I heat up brakes & the fluid up very quickly.

As for the oil a bypass filter is typically used in a setup with extended drain oil change intervals. I have thought about one however haven't been able to convince myself to spend the $$. There are PSD's running w/ 500k on regular oil changes w/ standard filtration so it's not a required. Others will tell you that since our injectors are fired by oil it's best for them however I haven't seen or heard of any problems with the oil portion of the injectors being scored from dirty oil but the portions that contact the fuel being scored from dirty fuel.

Why a HEUI system can benefit from a bypass oil filter

Not everyone uses extended drain intervals. I got my bypass to protect the injectors.
