Backspacing is measured one way. Offset can be + or -. Backspacing is the distance between the mating surface of the wheel to the edge of the wheel.

How to measure backspacing.

I've looked at this diagram before...Apparently my information is completely opposite. Does anyone know the distance from the front and rear hubs to inner wheel well or rear leaf spring?

On my 07 F250 FX4, stock I had 20"x8.5"? wheels with the 275/65R20 AT's. On the tire calculators...thats a 34x10.50 tire. I've seen 2 Coil sprung F250's running 35x12.50 ProComp Xtreme AT's on stock wheels. My brand new 35's only measure 33.5" on the truck. Very quiet tire. I'm in the process of dropping my lift and just trimming the front bumper lip and keeping the 35's on stock 20's. From what I've seen, the type of wheel you run makes a big difference how big of a tire you can go. Stock wheels allow you to go bigger.

My memory escapes me now. If the '04 has leaf springs, the 5" backspacing is too much. No more that 4.5" I believe. Smarter people with more sleep will correct me!

Usually a 10" wide wheel has 4.5 backspace. However the 17's are 9" wide with 5 backspace which is .5 smaller in width. Does this make sense? Tell me if I'm wrong

Just to put my .02 in here. I run 315-75/16's on my stock rim and front leveled. There is some rubbing at lock but not a big deal. Also I bought my maxxix mudders off ebay for $700 shipped and think I got a great deal!
good luck!
