There shouldnt be any movement. When I replaced MudHogs waterpump, it was a very firm feeling on the shaft. No movement, and actually took a little effort to turn as the pump seal grabs the shaft pretty hard.

SCA's are part of what destroys a waterpump, hence the reason International uses a filter head integrated into the pump. Ford (in the infinite wisdom) ditched the water pump filter, and now you get water pump failures from the sand and grit in the coolant.

SCA's turn into grit as they are picked away from the cylinder lining. Thats why they are "sacrificial coolant additives". They sacrifice instead of the actual cylinder wall!

Replace ASAP! I've got my story and T-shirt. Mine had no symptoms around 100k, until the fam and I went on a camping trip. Sunday returning home there was a racquet so loud it was heard in the cab over everything else. 100 miles later I'm home. Still not a drop of coolant I have no idea what's wrong. Sounds like the tensioner is torpedoing (like the chubby 2.8 v-6 units) Turn engine off, get second opinion from nieghbor who promptly just grabs the fan with belt on and moves it 1/8" all over the place. With belt off it was closeer to 3/8" movement  No damage to engine, didn't leak a drop, got me home in 100F weather on Sunday with 10k lbs TT, nagavator ( :roflmao ) and kids... I wasn't complaining. :cowboy:

Me too!! Just make sure you torque the mounting bolts to 15 ft-lbs, NOT the value found on the other site's directions...

Gentlemen, I had a terrible waterpump failure on a 04. Shaft broke and let the fan climb thru the shroud and wack the hood . WE check waterpump shaft play once a week now.
