Hey guys looking into getting my first diesel. I do lots of towing and hauling. Pretty sure I am getting a 350 xlt. Is there any issues you guys have heard of with the new 09's a guy should watch out for??? They pretty bulletproof trucks??

Sorry for the newbie questions. Just want to make sure i am gonna be happy with the 50k truck in my driveway.

Thanks

There is a problem with mileage and the emissions equipment. The mileage is bad, like 6 to 10 mpg with out towing. Do some reading in the 6.4 category and see for your self. Good Luck.

6-10mpg??? Really wow that is low. The chevy guys are saying 17mpg without towing. Thats a huge difference. Is this normal highway driving?? 100km/60mph or faster??

thanks daveB

I average almost 20 mpg in my Dodge/Cummins (a 2005) empty. I get an average of 13.8 towing my 5er. That's why I've put off trading for a Super Duty for now. I was a long-time Ford guy until 2005 when shopping for a diesel to tow my camper that I planned to buy. Several acquaintances who know diesels very well (one is a diesel mechanic) told me NOT to buy the Ford SD because the 6.0 PS was problematic. They recommended the Dodge/Cummins. I have to admit the truck has been flawless in 4 yrs of towing and the mileage I quote is hand calculated. Don't misunderstand; I love the looks of the new Super Dutys and would love to have one but I just can't afford to put that much into a fuel hog. I am eagerly awaiting the new 6.7 Scorpion diesel though and plan to check it out when it arrives!

You aren't comparing apples to apples with an 05 Dodge. That has a 5.9 Cummins WITHOUT all the emissions equipment current model year Diesels have now. A better comparison is a 2008 or 2009 Doge 6.7L Cummins with a 2008 or 2009 Ford 6.4L, if you do your homework, you'll see all of the Big 3's Diesels get similar mileage. All 3 are bad! A new 6.4L Ford with a full on Spartan tune and DPF/Doc delete will easily see more power and better mileage than you'd expect. Long story short, take everything you read on the internet with a grain of salt. Good Luck with whatever you choose. I have an 09 F350 on order right now, should see it any day now, and I can't wait to remove the DPF and give it the Spartan treatment!:drive

just traded on 08 chevy 2500 with the 6.6 lmm and allison trans. could get around 16.5 17.5 hand calc. on a trip, have seen close to 19. and around 14 in stop and go, but towing is a diff story, pulling a carolina skiff 218 dlv with alum. t-topp at 70 mph dropped to 10 and only 11 around 55-60. it had 5k miles on it. my f-250 only has 250 miles and not sure what it is going to be, dont think it is going to be that good. but i have a better built truck now:D and it feels like a truck should:clap:

x2

My 08 GMC w/6.6 LMM and Allison get 15 on the hwy at 75mph. With one of our 18ft boats it averages 12 mpg and if I have our 30ft boat/21ft airboat or a bumper pull camper I get 7-8mpg running 60-65 by hand calc on all. The DPF just kills the mileage on all the new engines. Good thing I get reimbursed for the fuel:sweet My 6.0 will pull all those at 12mpg if not better on 35's.
