If you are looking to upgrade your battery cables I ordered a complete set from custombatterycables.com and love them. Very heavy duty and much improved from stock. Granted, mine is an '01 with a 7.3 but I'm sure it would be an improvement from stock and may help narrow your issues down some.

Just an observation......I tried playing the "get every drop of old oil out of the HPOP" one time.....it is a never-ending task and I gave up and drank beer...never cracked the plug open again.
^ I would agree with the IDM being a possible factor. I replaced mine a few months ago thinking it may be the culprit. At 300k miles I figured it was a good time to replace it anyways.
Get the car gauge pro app and or the torque app on your phone/tablet,etc. and buy one of these. Works amazingly well and gave me some much needed info on my truck a few months ago. The set up will work on other vehicles as well...
