    In your case yes the only way to test it is to replace it. If it was a no start then I would say check and see if the tach moves when cranking. If it does then it is ok. Alot of times though when they go out as possible in your case the truck will start, but then die.

    Check and makes sure you are getting fuel. The no smoke at all, makes me feel like you don't. Your either not getting fuel or you not getting it delivered to the cylinders.

    Try plugging it in and seeing if it still does it. Also I know it only happens when it is cold but CPS's go out in very different ways could be on it's way out. After it stalls will it fire right back up? Or do you have to crank for awhile?
