I use to have yard birds that fed on bugs and such. Their meet was much better than what you would buy in the store. Plus living in Florida at the time in a wooded area, I needed all the help I could get with Palmetto bugs. Once we get back into the country I hope to do the same again. But this time I want some layers. Bama, do you see a cost benefit this way?

It could be awhile before I break even, giving the cost of having to build coops to put them in.

I think once the 4 new chicks start laying and with the potential of having 6 to 7 eggs per day, the dozens will rack up pretty soon.

So I do think in the long run it will be cost effective. I look at it this way, when the wife needs eggs (if we are out), then that's money and gas I am not having to buy/use just to run and get eggs. Plus, we enjoy them and it's been fun.
