Do they have a list or something so they know which 7.3 PowerStroke Diesels came with cats? Some did and some didn't.

I'm not aware of any such list. Most vehicles have it listed on an emissions sticker tho, have to check mine. I wonder if you can tell from the VIN? 
BTW, I still have my CAT intact. Peeked at it yesterday while fiddling with the downpipe clearance. Surprisingly it looked really clean. A light coat of gray, but the catalyst grid was very well defined, with neat square holes thru it.

We recently discussed the Cat in THIS THREAD and we still really dont have a clear answer as to why some do and some dont have cats. In some cases guys with autos have them while others dont, some cases it was the 6 spd's that didnt have them but not always. It doesnt seem to be related to 1 ton vs. 3/4 ton either?

My catalytic converter hardly causes any restriction at all. Of course, the fact that it's sitting on a shelf in the garage probably helps that...

Here's a thought. Are the trucks manufactured at different plants? Maybe the plant has something to do with it? Maybe the state of origination, meaning the state is was built to be shipped to?
Anyone know where to look on my truck to find the plant? It should be in the vin. I also have the window sticker still.

If/when a state starts emission inspections, how many years do they go back? 5 years, 10 years, indefinately ? Is that up to each state or is it federally mandated? Pete

I think what they do is hold the vehicle to the emission standards that it rolled off the factory production line with. Meaning if a 95 came with a cat, then the cat better be there on emissions testing day.

I recently installed a new dp and exhaust. Texas (each state is different) has confusing laws on the subject. I read them and discussed them with an inspection station. Apparently, here anyway, if it has one, you are supposed to keep it - one law says it is unlawful to remove an existing one. BUT, diesels are not required to have one so it is not visually inspected. I had my truck inspected a couple of weeks after the upgrade and it passed.
The upshot is, if you have one, dont remove it but if you do noone is likely to know. As for federal law changes, each vehicle is only held to the standard in place at its time of manufacture. So, even if the standards become more restrictive next week, we dont have anything to be concerned with.
For 1997, Ford was the only domestic diesel truck maker that put one on. Or so I understand.
