Hot rear brakes?

My 2005 F350 has developed a problem with the rear brakes. In the last week either the right or left side rear brakes are getting really hot. I notice it when I stop and get out of the truck. I can smell the brakes bad. One day it was the right side. the next day nothing. The next day the left side. Any ideas?

when was the last time rear brakes were serviced? do you use your parking brake?

Do the 05 brakes have the slide pins like the 99-04's? If they do it would be my guess that one is stuck

uummm ggeezz - that sounds all too familiar....i had that issue w/ the fronts...have not replaced the rear caliper brackets.....YET

I have a 2006 F350 PSD DRW and noticed one of my rear brakes smelling badly and smoking on the weekend. I was speaking with a buddy of mine that also has a similar truck and had the brakes serviced on it recently. The Ford dealer he took it to said that the rear calipers are prone to failure and they replaced his under warranty for him. Anyone else know of this? I talked to my dealer's service advisor and he wouldn't admit any such thing.

never heard of the rear's failing. at 85k, mine seemed fine. not sure of the 05 having slide pins...

I just had my rr caliper catch on fire this weekend. The common thing with the rear calipers hanging up is the rubber hose that goes from the line to the caliper collapses and needs replacement. Sometimes the caliper just hangs up too. They dont have slide pins, they have a spring clip so the pad pops back when the caliper releases.

I had that problem on my 06 f350. I put on new calipers on rear and brakes etc. It turned out to be a bad flex line going to the caliper.

The right rear caliper caught fire on mine July 2nd and just now got the truck back. I am not a happy camper - only 58,000 miles I never heard of such a thing. The Ford dealer tells me I am "not" the first one in the shop with the same problem. Very Costly $$$$

I've had an intermittant squeek with mine for a few months now...then I finally felt the right rear hat was warm. So, add this on top of the parking brakes not always working right...I finally took it apart.

The backing plate for the parking brake shoes is rusted out. I got a new part ordered...at my father-in-laws price of $110...Part guy said this is a common thing for these trucks.

Hopefully this will take care of it for another 5 years...at least on the one side.

But check the pins too...they can get gummed/rusted/corroded up and stop working proplerly. And yes, there are slide pins...the caliper has to be able to float to apply pressure to both pads and to compisate for wear.
