TG, I believe the P-51 we saw had the top like the first one of the two pictures (P-51A). I'd love to see a B-52 up close.

Tacit Blue which was the TOP SECRET test bed for every stealth airplane now flying.

Is it just me, or does Tacit Blue look like an RV with wings?:D

If that's the case, it might very well be the only P-51A still flying.

Some of the early P-51A models had a Allison engine in them and were a dog at altitude. The Brit's did an experiment and put the Merlin, the same engine as the Spitfire, into the P-51 and it became a hotter performer than the Spitfire was. The Army Air Corps brass was rather pig-headed about adopting the change for several months until bomber losses over Europe forced them to switch to the Merlin engine.

Once they were equiped with P-51 Mustang, the renouned Tuskegee Airman, began escorting bombers on their missions. Some bomber crew members expressed outrage at being escorted by fighters piloted by blacks. But in short order, they got the reputation of protecting their bombers very, very well. Before long, bomber units were specifically requesting the Tuskegee P-51 squadrons to be their escorts.
Not a single bomber under their escort was lost to German fighters. They were the only fighter unit in WWII to achieve such a record.

WOW, what an amazing story!!! I did not know that.

So you think that's a P-51A? I've got more pictures on my camera (that was from the phone) and will try to post them later tomorrow. Also, if I do get to go see them again this weekend at Love Field, I'll ask if it's a P-51A.

tg....you know why the allison engines where doggies?
seems during the era the government controlled all superchargers and the like, and if your contract was not in favor with the guys in dc...you couldn't get a supercharger
REALLY

just like the guys that killed the first flying wing jet aircraft.

I love ALL WWII movies and stuff. I buy the dvds on WWII and stuff. You guys ever watch the tv show on military history called dog fights?? Love that show! I've learned so much about old aircraft watchin those shows. P51's are my favorite I'd say. The Shelby Cobra of its days. Great to see them all flyin around still. I love the nose art on them too. I designed the graphics on my 2005 Kawasaki ZX636r after one. Its got the same graphics as the "Flying Tigers" pretty much. Even have a scantily clad woman on the side hehe. I will post a pic of it. Its complete with metal plates with rivets. One plane that I would love to see and fly in is an old Ford Tri Motor! I know there is still one flying today, I saw a news cast about it. Built Ford Tough! haha:sweet
