Hey everyone,

New to the board. Thought I'd join since my ride's getting up there in age and mileage, and there seems to be a ton of info here.

Been reading for a few weeks, and think this is a great site.

Anyways,

Was out the other day driving around in the mud so i had the manual hubs locked. No problem. 4x4 works fine when engaged, but as I got back on the road and disengaged 4by, I heard this sound coming from the front, kind of sounded like a rattle or a loose chain, or grinding.

It only happens when the hubs are locked and in 2wd. Talking with a guy I work with who had an older 3/4 ford, he said he had the same kind of thing when his needle bearings went in the hub. Just wondering if anyone else has encountered this. I need my truck to drive, so I can't just pull the front off to "see" if anything is wrong.

Thanks all.

If the hubs are locked the transfer case is spinning too and they are chain driven (so I was told)...So if you are talking about he noise you hear if you are coasting with the hubs locked going down the road....I would bet its the transfercase, and thats normal.
