At least 22 killed in Virginia Tech shooting...............

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - At least 22 people, including the suspected gunman, were killed and many others were wounded at Virginia Tech university on Monday in the deadliest campus shooting incident in U.S. history.

The rampage took place in two separate areas of the huge campus about two hours apart during the morning. Police said they believed a single gunman was responsible.

"This is a tragedy of monumental proportions," Virginia Tech president Charles Steger told reporters.

Virginia Tech campus police chief Wendell Finchum said the suspected gunman was dead and that police were trying to determine whether he killed himself or was shot by officers.

"At this time we believe it's only one gunman," said Finchum.

The death toll was worse than a massacre at the University of Texas in Austin on August 1, 1966, when trained marksman Charles Whitman killed 15 people, including his mother and wife the night before, and wounded 31 others.

The first shooting on Virginia Tech, a state university known for its demanding science and engineering curriculum, was reported to campus police at about 7:15 a.m. (1115 GMT) in West Ambler Johnston Hall, a dormitory housing some 900 students. It was followed by more shooting at another campus building, Norris Hall, Steger said.

The wounded were taken to hospitals in the area for treatment, he said.

Virginia Tech, with 26,000 students, is located in the southwest corner of the state, about 240 miles from Washington.

The campus had been closed for one day last August during a search for another gunman, CNN reported.

"It's just shock and anger around here right now," graduate student Elizabeth Stewart told CNN, adding she saw the shootings as "freak incidents" that would not stop her attending Virginia Tech.

"I love my school with all my heart and soul."

The university had already sent out an e-mail canceling classes after the first shooting when students heard more shots, another student, Laura Spaventa, told CNN.

Classes were canceled for Monday and Tuesday and counselors were being brought in talk to the students.

I just heard about this on the news, but all they want to talk about is how it could have been prevented. LOOK it happened I'm sure every single one of us would wish it had not, but we can't speculate about the past, too many variations. I didn't even know there were that many dead. I thought it was just a few, but that is what you get out of horrible news. I am greatly sorry for the people that are lost. I also am very pissed off at the media.

The greatest tragedy is that we are going to commit the same, horrific crime we did at Colombine, and in every other instance of a school shooting. Paste the killer's face on every TV screen. Tell his entire life's history, all the bad things that ever happened to him. Make him a dark celebrity, just like Harris and Klebold, so that every other looney-tune my-momma-didn't-love-me-enough COWARD that decides that his life is so bad that he needs to kill people for the fame can see that he, too, can be a celebrity. All you need is a gun and a bunch of ammo. The press is ensuring that the next school shooting won't be far off.

So are the parents, for that matter. I heard a story today where a guy was teaching his 5-year old to ice skate, and an errant slapshot from a couple of ten year old kids hit him in the foot. He tosses the puck back and tells the kids to be mroe careful. The ten year old boy turns to him and says "SHUT UP!!!" Then him and his friends start to taunt the guy.

The man, bless his heart, shows monumental restraint, skates over to the boy, grabs him by his collar, and escorts him off of the ice. The boy's mother, who apparently watched the whole scene, butts in at this point, and calls the police and now the man is in jail for assault on a minor!!!

What in the hell is worng with parents? My Dad would have told the guy to whoop my ass, then he would have carted me home and whooped it again for good measure!!!

This boy is the next school shooter. never denied ANYTHING in his life, never taught about disappointment, denial, or responsibility, and so when he grows up and finds out that the entire world really DOESN'T revolve around his stupid, selfish butt, he goes into a delusional depression (remember, he's never learned to deal with this sort of thing!) and kills people to get the attention that he really needs.

He is thinking he is a real tough guy for killing unarmed innocents. Just once i'd like to see the coward stick around until the SWAT team shows up and actually have a real gunfight with guys that can fend for themselves. Then we'd have some fun.

Oh, and the anti-gunners are just having an ORGY of self-rightiousness over this one. Chalk up another one for the bad guys.

Sean Hannity had John Lott, author of "More Guns, Less Crime" on his show today. This guy mentioned several instances where several people could have been killed by a crazy gunman, but were stopped by people who had guns. One was in Pearl, Mississippi where a kid was going to shoot up the school, but the principal had to go 1/4 mile to his truck (because the school didn't allow guns within 1000 ft of the building) and get his gun. This action stopped a possible bad situation. Here's an article that also says it all: Crime Rate Plummets in Kennesaw, GA Hannity noted instances in other areas where if someone at the scene (including the one at Va. Tech) had a gun, the "carnage" would have been less.

The thing that drives me nuts more than anything about this entire thing is that the media was harping gun control and other political views within 24 hours. The media in this country along with large corporations is out of control by thinking they are in control of what I think.
