starting fluid

i have heard multiple times that you do not want to use starting fluid on diesel engines. i think the reason for this is the fluid has a lower flash point (it explodes sooner) than diesel fuel. the problem with this is that diesels have such high compression the fluid will explode before the piston reaches the top of it's stroke causing internal engine damage. also as a sidenote, it says on the back of most cans "NOT FOR USE ON DIESEL ENGINES."
this doesnt really fix your problem, but hopefully it will help to prevent other problems.

The "Hutch" Mod involves dropping the tank (or removing the Bed) and reconfiguring the OE fuel pick up assembly. It is known to let air into the fuel system at lower fuel levels.. robs power. Do a search on "Tank Mods".. yul find a ton of info & DIY stuff. IIRC, www.dieselsite.com had a good write-up on it too.. and sells kit to fix it.

If you do the "Hutch" mod.. while yer in there... Do the "Harpoon" mod.. it involves cutting off All but 2" of the TO LONG vent tube. SNIP.. yer done and can fill the tank ALL THE WAY UP.. without dribbling.. the last 5 gallons in.

And..... While yer doing Tank Stuff.. you may as well delete the restrictor thingy out of yer fill tube.. a 1 5/8" hole saw will Hog that puppy right outa there. Then.. you can fill up with the Big Truck Nozzles.

OBTW.. X2 on NOT useing Starting Fluid.. good way to "window" a cold piston.

but why do Freightliners have an "ether start" system then??

;) Cuz a calibrated Psst, from an Ether Start System cartridge, engineered by the engine manufacturer is one thing......

But a Pssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssst, Psssssssst and one more Pssssst, for good measure... from a Spray Can, into an engine with Glow Plugs, is another ?
